John Doan - Emmy-Nominated Harp Guitarist

Celtic Pilgrimage

John Doan with his Harp-Guitar

Emmy-Nominee, John Doan is a master and pioneer of the twenty-string harp guitar (a conventional six string guitar with expanded range to either side).  He will make a rare UK appearance at St. Mary's church in Bruton.

Doan is performing his multimedia Celtic Pilgrimage for the first time at the prestigious Brighton Fringe Festival in the south of England. His Celtic inspired "Eire - Isle of the Saints" won "Best Celtic Album of the Year".

Beyond his redefining of what is possible on a guitar, John's music, written on location, chronicles the life and times of St. Patrick and others that were part of Ireland's "Golden Age" centuries ago. Breath taking landscapes, dramatic stories, and soulful melodies and arrangements were brought back and recorded.

"John Doan's music is both history and dream cast in the whole glorious, resonant range of the harp guitar"- Acoustic Guitar Magazine.

John's work with James Westbrook of the Guitar Museum in Brighton and harp guitar luthier Stephen Sedgwick of Kent brings him to the region to perform his award winning music in his return visit after the overwhelming response to his headlining performance at the Lewes Guitar Festival two years ago.

In addition to John's solo performances He recently toured with the Mason Williams and the New Christy Minstrels and has performed with a diverse range of artists from Burl Ives, Donovan, Rickie Lee Jones, and Larry Carlton.   His virtuoso playing and arranging has attracted praise from no less guitar luminaries than Chet Atkins and Doc Watson.  He has starred in "A Victorian Christmas With John Doan", which was nominated for an Emmy in the USA.  He is featured in a recent DVD release titled, "Primal Twang - the Legacy of the Guitar" with a veritable "who's who" of the guitar world today.

"...  the harp guitar of John Doan is twenty strings of magic.  Even after watching, I'm still not sure how he managed to do all that!", The Rocket - The Northwest Music and Entertainment Magazine

His musical inspirations range from American fingerstylist John Fahey to the guitar wizardry of Jimi Hendrix, from the renaissance elegance of English lutenist John Dowland to the impassioned playing of classical guitarist Julian Bream.
